Merlin: What if Mordred knew?

I thought of a plot twist that could redeem the final season of Merlin (a little bit, anyway). Season 5 spoilers under the cut.

What if Mordred knew about the prophecy/vision all along?

Mordred grew up in a Druid community and he has powerful magic, so there's a good chance he saw and/or heard about prophecies when he was younger. What if one of them was about him killing the king?

Mordred knows about the Once and Future King, Merlin the great sorcerer, and Albion. The last thing he wants to do is hurt Arthur, the one who will lift the ban on magic.

Merlin has given up on trying to change the future, but Mordred still believes he can. Surely if Mordred knows Arthur is "supposed" to die at his hand, he can prevent it from happening.

Except things don't go as well as Mordred had hoped. Yes, he becomes a knight and Arthur trusts him, but Mordred wanted to befriend Merlin too. Instead, Merlin is wary of him and admits he cannot trust him. But Mordred still wants to help Camelot, so he sticks around.

Then something makes Mordred snap or maybe Morgana finds a way to control him. He ends up killing Arthur, even if he didn't want to do it. The king dies and the prophecy comes true. Mordred can't live with what he's done, so he lets the knights kill him. He doesn't even fight back.

Of course, this kind of twist would have needed a foundation, or at least more screen time for Mordred. We didn't have either of those.
