I don't like complaining about Merlin, but it's one thing when the show doesn't progress (where it could) and another when things that should have logically happened, don't.
I liked tonight's episode but the ending should have been different. Spoilers below for 5.07 "A Lesson in Vengeance."
The biggest problem with Merlin as a series is that these characters are smart but the writing continues to make them behave ignorantly and illogically.
I'm glad the potion maker came back at the end of the episode, but it should have ended with Gwen's arrest on grounds for treason.
A proper investigation and interrogation would have the potion maker tell Arthur how the poison works. The first vial makes the subject unconscious. The second one has to be administered to the ear and brings on a slow and horrible death.
Many people could have put the first liquid into Arthur's food or drink. The cook, kitchen servants, and the servant who brought dinner to the table are all possible suspects. But only someone who was at dinner with Arthur could have given him the second vial. The servant left after he put the food on the table, so that leaves only Gwen. She's the only one who could have poisoned Arthur.
If the knights thought about it, they would have realized this.
Another thing that bothered me: The knights didn't question why Gwen accused Merlin. Yes, he has access to all of the citadel and is close to Arthur, but Merlin has proven himself loyal many times. The knights all know that, but they still think he's a reasonable suspect? It doesn't make sense.
I liked that Arthur didn't doubt Merlin, but he must have known that is was Gwen who accused Merlin. Is he going to ask her about it?
These characters aren't stupid but the writers leave these gaps in their logic. Merlin and Gaius know what's really going on because they suspect Morgana is controlling Gwen. But everyone else has enough reason to be suspicious of Gwen or at least doubt her when she accuses Merlin. But instead they go along with what she says. It's sloppy writing.
